5 Stars to VALKYRIE RISING by Ingrid Paulson

Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she’s there.

What Ellie doesn’t anticipate is Graham’s infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect something powerful and ancient to awaken in her and that strange whispers would urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, there’s suddenly a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.

Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly-epic coming of age.

I had high hopes for this book. I’ve been expecting it to come out since June. I’m so glad it was everything I wanted and even more.

Valkyrie Rising takes place, of course, in Norway. That’s the second thing I liked about the book. The setting. Norway’s landscapes are amazing. Mythology is the first thing. I’m a huge mythology geek. I know all about the Greek one, being Greek myself, but I’ve been looking for a YA book with Norse mythology since forever. Fortunately, I found one and it didn’t disappointed me one bit.

The book is fast-paced and full of action. I was hooked since the first page. Even though there’s no particular action in the beginning of the book, it makes you want to read. I guess the swoon-worthy romance will do that to you which starts since the first chapter. Yum!

Another thing I’ve loved about this book is its characters. Ellie’s a badass, protective, funny heroine that is truly inspiring. Plus, she’s a Valkyrie. VALKYRIE. How can’t she be awesome? And then there’s Tuck. Sexy, sarcastic, hilarious with a dark secret. H-O-T, ALL RIGHT! 😉 The other characters are also great. Graham – a little pushy but he loves Ellie and he’d do anything for her. Hilda – badass Grandmother Valkyrie who is afraid by everyone. What’s not to love?

To sum up, I’d recommend this book to anyone who wants an action packed novel with a kickass heroine, Norse mythology and hot romance. This book is great! I can’t wait to read the second book. If the debut is that good, the sequel will be ASDFGHJKL. 😉
