Welcome to the UKYA extravaganza blog tour!

In case you’ve been living under a rock the past few days, this is an event set up by Kerry Drewery and Emma Pass where 35 of UK’s finest YA authors will gather together in Waterstones, Birmingham and do all things bookish. It’s going to be a grand time! (Sadly, I can’t go, but I’ll be stalking the hashtag like cray cray). So…what now?

There will be a spotlight on each of these authors and today, mine is on…Emma Pass. Her debut novel, Acid, has had high praise here in the UK…so, here’s our interview. 🙂

Hi, Emma! Thanks for appearing on the BookNerds blog. 🙂 When did you start writing? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or was it a gradual thing?

I realised I wanted to be a writer when I was 13 – until then, I thought I was going to be a musician or an artist. I went to see the film Jurassic Park and afterwards, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I started to write a sequel and a few days later, it suddenly hit me that this was what I really wanted to do. It was a real ‘Eureka!’ moment.

How did the idea for ‘Acid’ come about? And was it difficult writing such a futuristic setting?

I first had the idea for ACID when I was 14, and a friend and I challenged each other to write a story about someone escaping from jail in a futuristic Britain. I came back to the story several times over the years, and finally tried writing it as a YA novel. I wouldn’t say it was difficult creating the setting, but it was a lot of work, because I was basically building a world from scratch, trying to imagine what the UK would be like in 100 years time when ACID had taken over. I had to invent new technology and try and figure out the politics, what people would wear, where they’d live and so on. It was fun, though!

Are you a sci-fi fan?

I do like sci-fi but I wouldn’t say I’m a hardcore sci-fi fan. I read really widely and like books in pretty much every genre, because every book you read teaches you about writing, even if it’s not in the genre you write in.

Are there any books/authors that inspire you?

Too many to list! If I had to pick one, though, it would be Stephen King. I got into him shortly after I started writing when I was 13, and to this day I’m still blown away by his skill as a storyteller.

Your main character Jenna has quite a fierce personality, was she based on anyone you know, and was it easy to write her?

She wasn’t based on anyone I know, but she did march into my head fully formed, which made her fairly easy to write. I really enjoyed it, actually, because it’s a lot of fun to write such a kick-ass character.

I’m an aspiring writer myself, and I’m always interested to know how other writers organise. Is there any particular place you prefer to write, and do you have a set amount of time you set aside, or is it on whim?

I used to write on the sofa with my laptop, but it hurt my neck, so now I’ve got a proper desk and a big comfy chair. It really helps with the neck problems and I wish I’d got my desk a lot sooner!

When I’m writing a draft, I do try and be fairly disciplined as quite often, especially when I’m writing a first draft (which I loathe doing) I’d rather do anything than actually sit down and write! What works best for me is setting myself a daily word count of 1000 words, and I’m not allowed to finish until I’ve got those words down.

I thought it’d be good to know a bit more about you; so…what’s your favourite colour?

Purple! I love it. I even have a purple stone in my engagement ring. Well, it is supposed to be the colour of creativity…

What advise would you give to new writers?

Never give up. Everything you write teaches you something. And the next book you write might be the one that gets you an agent or a publisher, but if you don’t write it, how will you ever know?

You can find Emma Pass on twitter: https://twitter.com/emmapass

Thank you to Emma for being nice enough to let me interview her. Of course, it’s only afterwards that I think of more questions. *face palm* In any case, this has been fun and enlightening. See below for the #UKYAExtravaganza blog tour dates

If you’re just finding out, tickets have sold out, but I’m pretty sure there’ll be all sorts of news on the day spread across the twitterverse. 🙂

Bridges Burned

By Chris Cannon

January 27, 2015

Don’t just fight the system…burn it. Since discovering she
is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday
(surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a
“crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not
with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And
definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for
rule-breaking…
But sneaking around
with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed
to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for
an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former arch-nemesis Jaxon Westgate
isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to
fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.
Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.
BUY IT ON AMAZON,
ITUNES, BARNES AND NOBLE, & KOBO:

Excerpt:

On the drive back to school, Bryn reflected on how her life had recently gone to hell.
It had all started when flames shot out of her mouth on her sixteenth birthday,
proving she wasn’t completely human. Since then she’d been shipped off to a secret
school for dragons—the Institute for Excellence—where she was learning how to
control her shape-shifting dragon powers. She’d faced discrimination, death threats,
and poisoning. She’d been blown up and involved in a battle to the death with a
radical Revisionist member—and she’d been there for only a few months.
Though not everything about her new life was bad. She had a sexy boyfriend, Black
dragon Zavien Blackthorn, and two good friends, Clint and Ivy. Being a crossbred
dragon meant she had both the Red and Blue dragons’ breath weapons, fire and ice,
and even though she was the only crossbreed, she could still outfly even the fastest
Blue. Of course, that’s why some of the other Clans hated her. She’d upset the
natural order of things in this color-coded world, where the Directorate dictated
what Red, Black, Green, Orange, and Blue dragon Clan members could do as a
profession and whom they could marry. It was absurd. Yet most dragons didn’t
question it.
Part of Zavien’s appeal lay in the fact that he headed up the student Revisionist
group that petitioned the Directorate to change outdated laws. Bryn glanced at
Directorate lawyer Merrick Overton, who was driving the Cadillac SUV hybrid she
was riding in. Her classmate and former nemesis Jaxon Westgate rode shotgun. She
and Jaxon no longer hated each other. Scratch that: he no longer hated her based on
his father’s vendetta against her mother, but that didn’t mean they were friends.
Funny how saving someone’s life could turn you from enemies to…what? Not
friends. Frenemies, maybe? Who knew? It’s not like she wanted to hang out with
him, but there was a weird level of trust between them now that she didn’t know
what to do with

Title: The Fire Mages

Author: Pauline M. Ross

Genre: Epic Fantasy Adventure / Romance

Kyra has always been drawn to the magic of spellpages. She is determined to leave her small village far behind and become a scribe, wielding the power of magic through her pen. Halfway through her training, she has a mage as patron and her ambitions are within her grasp. But a simple favour for her sister goes disastrously awry, destroying Kyra’s dreams in an instant.

Devastated, she accepts an offer from a stranger to help her find out what went wrong. The young man sees growing power within Kyra, potentially stronger than spellpages or any living mage. The answers to unlocking that power may lie within the glowing walls of the Imperial City, but its magic is strong and the unwary vanish without trace on its streets. Thirsty for knowledge and desperate to avoid another accident, she feels compelled to risk it.

While she focuses on controlling her abilities, a storm of greed and ambition boils up around her. Kyra is a pawn in the struggle for dominance between unscrupulous factions vying for rule of her country. Trusting the wrong side could get her killed–or worse, the potent magic she barely understands could be put to unthinkable evil.

EXCERPT

The highway was lined three or four deep in honour of the Kellon’s arrival, despite a misty rain. I was there with my whole family – Mother, Father, three sisters, two brothers, and my eldest sister’s husband and children. The procession arrived an hour or two later than expected. A long train of horsemen in the local colours preceded several fine carriages, wagons of luggage and finally the open carts for the servants. The Kellon and most of his retainers would stay at the village guest house, with the overflow squeezed into the inn.

The Kellon himself rode near the front, his armour loose enough to accommodate his belly. Guards surrounded him, and behind came several men in leather riding trousers and long coats, the full skirts trailing over their horses’ rumps. I spotted the bulk of the Kellon’s Steward, and one man was recognisable as a mage by the tattoo on his forehead. The others were indistinguishable older men with serious faces looking straight ahead, either uninterested in the village peasantry or with their thoughts fixed on weightier matters. Or perhaps focused on their stomachs, since they were late for the noon board.

One man was different. He was younger than the others, only a few years older than me, and since he wore no riding scarf, his dark hair jumped out of the array of blond heads around him. Odder still, as he passed by, he turned towards me and stared directly into my eyes, as if, somehow, he knew me and had picked me out from the sea of identical women. Yet I had never seen him before.

“Well, that was peculiar,” said Alita, my next oldest sister. “I’ve not seen him here before. Why did he look at you in that way?”

I could only shrug. I shivered, suddenly chilled from standing so long in the drizzle.

Title: Henge (Le Fay Series)

✽ Author: Realm Lovejoy ✽

✽ Genre: YA Fantasy ✽

Inspired by one of the greatest legends of all time…

Modern-day Camelot. Where knights no longer carry swords. Magic is dangerous. And those who seek control are not to be trusted.

Sixteen-year-old Morgan le Fay is a fire user. An ordinary girl with an extraordinary skill, she has the ability to create and command fire at will. Her dream is to become the Maven—the right hand of the future King Arthur. In the chance of a lifetime, Morgan is selected to join Arthur’s Round, an elite group of young magic users from which the new Maven will be chosen.

Along with the other fire, water, and wind users in Arthur’s Round, Morgan is rigorously trained and tested. The handsome Merlin, a brilliant water user, takes a particular interest in her. Is his friendship to be trusted, or is Merlin simply trying to win the position of Maven for himself? Among the many rivals Morgan faces is the current Maven, Mordred, who seems determined to see her fail.

But Morgan has a secret—years ago, her mother was executed for using fire magic, and Morgan’s desire for justice makes her more than ready to take on the challenge before her. Can she prevail in Camelot’s tests of survival and magic? Only time—and Morgan’s powerful fire—will tell.

Realm Lovejoy’s modern Arthurian series features one of literature’s most complicated and powerful female figures. Henge is the first book in the LE FAY series, and—like Morgan le Fay’s magic—it is sure to dazzle and amaze.

❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂

Excerpt

We head toward the east side, near the King’s Tower, to which I haven’t ventured before. The building we approach has a door with two sculptures of medieval knights on either side, their faces covered with a helmet.

This is the Knight’s Station,” Lancelot explains, catching my gaze.

We pass through a hall. More armor, shields, and swords hang on the walls.

Knights were a lot more honorable back then.” He gestures to the decorations. “Now, instead of a sword, I’ve got a simple trigger that unleashes a bullet—it’s almost a coward’s weapon.”

Lancelot pats the gun by his side as he takes me into what appears to be a small meeting room, surprisingly plain for how ornate the hallway is. There’s a table and two chairs. He sits me down in the poorly lit room.

Do you ever use your gun?” I ask to break the silence.

Sometimes. It’s been peaceful lately… until the fire. Might have to use it again soon.”

Lancelot smiles at me as he goes to the windows to further close the venetian blinds. As the light diminishes, my anxiety heightens as to why I’m here. I have nothing to look at except for his back. His shoulders are the epitome of male idealism—square, strong, and nicely slimming down to his waist. Like a model. I mentally kick myself and look at the table instead.

Do you know Ban du Lac?” Lancelot asks.

I shake my head.

My old man. He has a stout with your father, Sir Gorlois, once in a while. I hear Sir Gorlois is a brave man—it’s no surprise he has raised a strong lady. You ran into that fire. Wouldn’t expect anything less from Sir Gorlois’s daughter.”

A recorder is on the table. He flicks it on. He sees the bewilderment on my face and doesn’t look away as he lights a cigarette, which I’m sure is not allowed in here.

Gorlois must be proud that you’re in Arthur’s Round to serve the King.”

His cigarette smoke is already suffocating me.

Lancelot studies me. His eyes are silver and searing. The first thing I think of is a knife. His eyes are weapons—and he knows the affect they have on people, especially women. His mouth curves into a smile, deliberate and slow.

“Hearing that story makes me wish I could have been the one to protect you,” he said.

“I don’t need your protection,” I sniffed. “I’m little, but I can take care of myself.”

“Everyone needs help. Sometimes.” He reached up and slid the hair back from his face exposing the scar on his cheek.

I didn’t know how to answer that. I still didn’t know how he’d gotten those scars, but more than that, I didn’t know who I wanted protecting me now.

I stepped through the fence. “I guess this is good-night,” I whispered.

“Sleep well, doctor.”

I shook my head and sneaked past the cabins across the dark yard and into the dormitory. Once inside I stood for several minutes with my face pressed against the doorjamb.

Why was this happening? I wasn’t this kind of person. Other girls got their feelings all mixed up over boys, but I didn’t. That question had been settled in my mind years ago, and yet here I was acting like a starry-eyed little twit. I was failing in my job to rescue us. Everyone was counting on me, and here I was useless, fighting this battle with myself. I had to get it together. I had to get myself back on track, for all of us.

A tiny old woman sat on the porch of a house a few yards back from the boardwalk. I’d taken no notice of the small yellow house when passing by, as most of the houses this way were just as tumbled down as the red cabins around them.
The yellow house was short and squat, the paint faded and chipping around the windows. A round window peeked from above the porch but it was dark and cloudy.
“I’m sorry,” the old woman said. She talked so slowly it sounded like she might kick the bucket any minute now. “Did I scare you?”
Yes, I find you incredibly freaky, I thought. Your little house is creepy and your voice is like bugs crawling on my skin. “No,” I chirped aloud.
“The ocean can make one jumpy,” she smiled.
You have no idea.
One of her wrinkled hands strayed to absently touch the shiny paisley scarf covering her hair. “Do you need directions somewhere?” The hand wandered down her short neck and finally settled back in her lap.
“No,” I stammered, “I’m just looking.” Just looking? For what? An early death?
“Oh, yes, there is a lot to look at, isn’t there?” The old woman seemed pleased with this. She sat in a huge wooden rocking chair, bobbing slowly but diligently back and forth. It creaked—either the chair or the woman’s old joints—at regular intervals. A matching chair rocked, empty beside her. An effect of the wind rolling off the ocean, no doubt, but a shiver skittered down my spine nonetheless.
“The best suns are always after the best storms,” she said.
I nodded, though she didn’t look at me. Her dark eyes, after appraising me once, had returned to roving the horizon of the ocean, never stopping to linger over anything in particular. Her hands lay limply in her lap as her feet, in house slippers, kept the chair rocking.
“The waves are big today,” she continued. “There was a puddle over there, thought maybe the sun had caught an ashray.”
My automatic grunt of a response died in my throat. Ash what?
“Nothing left but a puddle of water if it’s caught in the sun. They’re nocturnal, you know.” She looked at me this time.
“I … uh, yeah …” No, no, I didn’t know, and I sure as hell didn’t want to know.
“So you must never swim at night. But do watch for water spirits,” she said. “Not all dangers are nocturnal.”
“Water spirits. Of course.” I nodded vaguely because asking what a water spirit was would be counterproductive to my escaping this terrifying conversation.
“You’ll help me, won’t you, dear?” she said, without looking at me.
“I …” have absolutely no response for this. What on earth could I help her with?
“And make sure you are careful, when you go to swim.”
I grabbed at the excuse. “Yes, of course, and—and I was just on my way to do that—to go swim—I should be going. Swimming. That way.” I backed away slowly, waiting for her to toss another warning about ashbugs at me, but she was only nodding slowly at the horizon.
As if I needed more reasons to be terrified of the water—water ghosts hadn’t even made my preexisting list. Summer in this town was going to be worse than I’d previously assumed. Already 100 percent of the population I’d met was certifiably whacko.
