Hi!! It’s cover reveal time and look what we have?

Enscrolled: The Division Chronicles #3

By Connie L. Smith

In the aftermath of the latest battle, the stakes are higher than ever before, and time is hardly an ally to Nicholai’s army of paranormal soldiers. The Tomes remain hidden, their secrets the only chance the warriors possess of forever closing the Division and saving their world from a brutal finale.

But with every second that passes, the Division expands, more demons – equipped with an incurable toxin – managing to enter the realm to inflict their terror where they can. The clock is ticking on the soldiers already tainted with the venom, their lives depending on the quick creation of an unknown antidote. And beyond those worries, reason exists to suspect that magic might be vanishing. Should that belief prove true, the ramifications could cripple the army’s abilities, insurmountably, prior to the war’s conclusion.

Never has the conflict felt quite as desperate to the Essenced soldiers, danger escalating and hope lessening with the slow drain of each issue’s hourglass.

Will the answers to these dilemmas surface in time, or will the efforts of the band of warriors fail to prevent the ruin of the world?

McKenna watched him leave before refocusing on Johnny, confused at the expression her boyfriend wore. “What are you smirking at?”

He shrugged. “I’m just not sure how this could be such a bad memory. My girl glued to my side.” Wiggling his eyebrows, he continued. “Playing nurse…”

“Well, you are poisoned,” she deadpanned. “That puts a damper on these types of situations for most people.”

“Oh, you’re serious again.” His smirk broadened. “Are you gonna yell at me like you did when my leg was broken? That was attractive…”

Though she fought against it, her smile emerged, spreading over her lips as she shook her head. “You’re impossible. You know that?”

“Nah. I just learned along the way how to make my girl smile.”

Her grin lingered until her attention descended to his leg, the spot of the poison’s initial contact. Then she frowned, her eyes filling with tears and her hands beginning to tremble. Just ten days, she thought.

“Hey.” Johnny cupped her face, gentling bringing her gaze to lock with his. “We’re not gonna think about that because that’s gonna get taken care of.” Tobias again entered the medical room, moving directly to the corner reserved for the cure’s research to recommence his work. “See?” Johnny nodded his head toward the angel. “Look how dedicated he is to finding this. Think of all the soldiers around us who are perfectly capable of getting whatever weird ingredients he comes up with. If you do, ten days will seem like a lifetime, because it’s plenty of time.”

And then she was the one smirking. “That’s quite optimistic.”

He laughed, shrugging. “I told you that you’re rubbing off on me.”

“And you’re trusting others. Like you finally flipped a switch.”

“It isn’t like flipping a switch.” He smiled, revisiting the lecture she’d given him while stranded on a cliff. “It’s like deciding not to be in the darkness anymore. You take steps, and the light comes a little at a time until the darkness is gone.”

She quirked an eyebrow, chuckling. “That seems vaguely familiar.”

“Someone really smart once told me that.” Pulling her closer, he tapped the tip of her nose with his finger. “She was really hot, too.”

About Connie L. Smith

Connie L. Smith spends far too much time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and will be forever sad that she doesn’t have fairy wings. And that she can’t swing dance. When she isn’t reading or writing, there’s a good chance she’s goofing off with her amazing, wonderful, incredible, fabulous nieces and nephew, or listening to music that is severely outdated. She has her BA from Northern Kentucky University in Speech Communication and History (she doesn’t totally get the connection either) and likes to snap photos. Oh, and she likes apples a whole big bunch.

How about an excerpt?

The plush terry cloth robe slipped from Ireland’s shoulders with a whispering caress before pooling in a heap around her ankles. Marble tiles chilled her bare feet as she stepped into the walk-in shower. The tips of her fingers slid across stainless steel. With a flick of her wrist, the trio of showerheads flowed to life. Welcoming heat came at her from all angles, pulsating over her curves with a rhythmic seduction. Ireland turned, a groan escaping her as the streams massaged all the right places. Steam rose, fogging the handle and creating a cloud of humidity that hugged her frame. Tipping her head back, she let the droplets rain down on her face and across her closed lids. Her lips parted, welcoming the rush of warmth that flooded between them. Until it assaulted her tongue with a rush of coppery warmth that clamped her throat shut with a wretched heave. Her hands cupped to catch the droplets, her eyes widening as thick crimson pooled in her palms, seeping between her ivory fingers. Formerly white tiles were now smattered and smeared with blackish-red gore that sprayed from the nozzles. Ireland threw herself from the shower, her feet slipping beneath her. She reached out to steady herself, but found nothing to hold on to. Nothing there to pull her back from the brink, except her own need for self-preservation … and a shadowed silhouette in the corner. Instinctively, she covered herself with her arms. Squinting, she craned her neck to see the figure that was slowly turning to face her.

Mason?” Her voice echoed around her before she could even speak it.

He stared straight ahead with fixed, unseeing eyes. Blood trailed down his face from various points of origin, soaking the front of his shirt. “Cloak of night, brings Horseman’s plight. His pricy toll, will be a soul.”

Mason? Are you okay?”

A hard blink and his eyes found focus on her. A desperate panic flared his nostrils, forcing his breath to come fast and ragged. “Help me, you have to help me,” he pleaded, his teeth pink with the blood that streamed past his lips.

Her trembling hand reached for him, then recoiled at her own inept state of confusion. “H-how? What do I do?”

You have to save us,” Mason’s words became more garbled by the fresh rush of gore that bubbled up the back of his throat. His once handsome face contorted in rage. Leaning forward he balled his fists and screamed with a force that bulged the tendons of his neck, “Save us!

About the author:
There is nothing worse than being put on the spot and asked to talk about yourself. For me it brings back that inevitable moment in a new school when the teacher would ask me to stand up, introduce myself and tell the class something about myself. I was always worried I would blurt out something stupid that I would get teased for. Something like, “My name’s Stacey and I like pickles!” Then for the rest of the school year I’d be known as the Pickle Girl and let’s be honest, no one wants that. So to avoid such a faux pas I will simply say that I love to write. It allows me to get my crazy out just enough that I can function as a normal member of society.

EXCERPT:

Another loud bang beats at the door. Her father growling as he begins to speak. “Courtney! You had best get your ass out!” He hits the door just right, it busts open, and catches her ankle…. She looks down, watching a line of blood surge from her opened skin. A tear falls from her face. She knows what’s next. Her father is like clockwork. Immediately, she covers her head as her towel slips down her waist and she leans over trying to get as close to the floor as possible. If she leans into the floor, she won’t have to worry about her face bouncing, causing more bruising.
He begins pushing his way through the door. “God damn it girl! You get out when I tell you to.”
A hard punch to the back of the head. She shivers as she waits for him to hit her again, pushing her way deeper into the back of the toilet. Anything to keep him from hurting her. This time he uses an open hand slap to her lower back. She jumps hugging the toilet. “Please,” she whimpers.
“Please, what? More?” He kicks her rear at that, and her legs are the only thing exposed by this time.
She continues laying down, shoved as far as she can get herself beside the toilet. Waiting for whatever else her dad might throw at her. Courtney is shaking uncontrollably, tears are streaming down her face and mingling with the snot coming out of her nose. More whimpers as she lays, waiting…..

~*~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~*~

S.M. Knowles was born in Elmira, New York where she was swept away in a whirlwind to the Land of Oz—Independence, Kansas. Her parents were relocating for working opportunities and decided that this would be the perfect place to start new roots. Little did she know that this place would contribute to the inspiration for the first book she wrote in her Rylee Everley Series.

While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies.

At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again.

When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Training.

Immortal Sin #1 by Julie Milillo – Blog Tour

Posted 12 April, 2014 by katheryn13 in Book Promo, Mature, Romance, Supernatural, YA / 0 Comments

Welcome to the Immortal Sin and Immortal Descent blog tour. We have some fun teasers ready for you today…

Check out these great books:

Immortal Sin #1

Two Worlds.Three Questions.One Girl.

inevitable? What lies beneath the hidden secret?
Can love rise above the

And most importantly, where will her fate lead her?

Amanda Chaste had lived what she considered an average life in New Jersey, looked after and cared for by her grandmother. But when she accidentally meets an enigmatic stranger from out of town, her world is drastically thrown upside down. A hidden secret has been buried in the past and not even Amanda can save herself from her own fate.

Conflicted and tormented within her own flesh, discovering her true identity will prove to be something that will change her life forever.

Excerpt 1:

It was all happening too fast for Amanda to conjure up any thoughts to try and attempt to fly before gravity let her go.

Panic crawled beneath every inch of her skin as the coaster started to quickly incline up the tracks. She knew that there would be no way that gravity would hold her in her seat throughout the entire loop. Once she would reach the middle, she’d be done for. The upcoming flip looked like the fiery ring of death and Amanda’s eyes grew wide with unbearable fear. The very thought of falling with nothing to hold onto terrified Amanda to the very core of her soul.

Excerpt 2:

The murky clouds hung low in the sky, threatening to down pour at any moment. The air was brisk for a spring day and a light breeze tossed around some strands of her layered, blonde hair. Amanda crossed her arms over her tee shirt, trying to retain some of her body heat as she made her way through the grass. The thought of looking into those eyes made her both nervous and anxious.

A shiver ran down the back of her spine, but she couldn’t determine if it was her nerves or the chill of the air. It urged her to get as close to him as she could, just to obtain that feverish temperature he exuded. She stopped and stood a couple feet away from him, not knowing what to expect next. She watched as he lifted his eyes to face hers.

“Were you followed?” Mitch broke the silence and looked toward the direction in which she came.

“No, I don’t think so, it’s just me.” Amanda said, looking at him awkwardly and unsure.

4 stars to Alchemy (Prophecy Breakers #1) by Sheena Boekweg, Melanie Crouse and Sabrina West

Posted 30 January, 2014 by katheryn13 in Book Promo, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, YA / 0 Comments

“Do you want me to be dangerous?” he asked, his voice husky and low.
I gulped, and for a moment I was incapable of speech. But he was quiet, waiting. “No. I don’t.”
“Then I’m not dangerous at all,” he murmured. His gaze moved from my eyes to my mouth. “You’ve never been safer than you are at this moment.” I shivered as his breath tickled my skin. Our lips were mere millimeters apart when the sky shattered in a kaleidoscope of colored light.

We didn’t know how much we had to lose until we were infected with magic. Sam was in love, Juliette was the main caretaker for her siblings, and Ana and her dad planned the best parties in New York. But we lost it all when we were shipped to Chebeague, an exclusive school for newly infected mages.

Everyone knows about the mages, those who survive the infection and end up with magical abilities. We’ve seen the power of magic, the high-paying jobs, and the world fame. But we never saw the cost. We didn’t know we’d be forced to give up everything: sanity, family, even the right to talk on the phone.

We didn’t know mage was just another word for prisoner.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Review:

Magic? Check. Romance? Check. A creepy school for the infected mages even if you’re not infected or a mage? Check check.

Wow, I love this. It’s intriguing, fresh, and not as complicated as I’d expected given there are 3 authors. There are 3 main characters: Ana, Sam and Juliette. It’s obvious that each author had their own character, so it wasn’t hard to understand.

The story is told in journal form, which is cool, although at times the tense tended to change from present to past to present, etc etc. I was getting a little confused.

There haven’t been many books about magic other than the obvious that I’ve read, and to say these are regular “wizards” is wrong. In this, they are called Mages and there are certain types of skills each person is better at. Prophecy, Pushing, Temp, Super senses, Healing and Alchemy. It’s very different to lots of other books out there and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

The characters are young, but they don’t necessarily behave it, which can at times be off putting but mostly it’s nice because then you actually see the story and not just how stupid they are.  Although, yeah they can be stupid. Getting into trouble, escaping places and generally being rebels.

Can’t wait for the sequel.

About the Authors

Sabrina West, Sheena Boekweg and Melanie Crouse never dreamed they would actually create a book worth publishing when they started writing together. Alchemy was merely supposed to be an exercise in flexibility. And it has been that, but it is so much more. Friendships that span the American continent have been forged, and unforgettable characters have been created.

Writing this first book in the Prophecy Breakers was a fun-filled adventure, and we hope that reading it is just as fun for you.

Here at BookNerds we’re pleased to be hosting Dead New World by Ryan Hill. Check it out…Zzzzzzzzombies!

DEAD NEW WORLD

HoltZombies aren’t mindless anymore.

They follow orders. And if Holt and Ambrose want to kill some undead, they’ll do the same. But when a routine mission goes horribly wrong, the best friends’ lives are flayed to the bone.

Now there’s only one light in the darkness of Holt’s life, and when she’s taken, he’ll do anything to get her back. Even if that means defying orders and using his best friend as a weapon. Holt and Ambrose risk all to save her, but what they discover among the hordes threatens to remake humanity. Again.

In the end, will there be anything left to live for in this dead new world?

The Campaign:

The Kickstarter campaign is live! It’ll run from November 14 to December 14, and we are so excited! We believe that by using crowd-sourcing we will be able to generate buzz and interact with readers even before the book is published. It also brings authors and readers together so that they are both part of the publication journey. And as the publisher, we look forward to strengthening that bond. We’ve chosen Ryan Hill’s Dead New World as our first project and are looking forward to sharing it with you. Thank you for spreading the word. Now let’s make beautiful zombies together!

Check out how you can help get this project going by visiting Kickstarter:

Zombies: Why the brains? By Ryan Hill

Of all the body parts available to munch on if you’re a zombie, why is it always the brain that seems the most delectable? Does it have some kind of nutritional content I’m unaware of? Maybe brains are high in protein. Regardless, zombies seem to love them.

Isaac Marion, in his wonderful novel Warm Bodies (which also made a very enjoyable film), posits that zombies love brains because it allows them to relive the memories of their victims. It’s the closest to living they’ll ever get in their deathly state. Marion may have a point. They want most what they don’t have life.

Why do zombies predominantly try to eat people, which according to Richard Connell, is the most dangerous game? Just go after cats or something. Maybe it’s because misery loves company. The zombies are dead, so why not drag down everybody else with them?

Honestly though, I sort of side with Marion on this. Not that I think they want to relive life through their victim’s memories, but the brain is what separates them from the living (well that and a healthy complexion), so that’s what they want the most. And when you’re dead, you don’t really have any responsibilities or, you know, feelings, so who cares if you eat a few brains?

Dead New World book trailer:

Some info on the author:

Ryan Hill likes to keep zombies in a safe place—his head. If zombies ever do take over, the thought of living off canned beans is not enticing. At all.

Ryan uses a healthy dose of real life and imagination to come up with stories, and typically spends his time, reading, writing, and watching movies or TV shows…anything involving a good story. Drop him a line on Twitter @J_Ryan.
