Day 6
January 9th
Book I’m reading: The House of Hades (Heroes of Olympus #4) by Rick Riordan
Pages read: about 80, I think. I know I did 66 yesterday (day 5) but I lose track.
Another slow day. I kept on telling myself to read, read, read! But then I just found more distractions. Like tv. And food. And twitter. You get where I’m going, right? Anyway, lots sidetracked me from the important task of reading and I didn’t get a lot done.
Day 7 is the day.
It better be.

Day 5

January 8th
Book I’m reading: The House of Hades, book 4 in the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan.
Well, let’s just say I struggled to find something else to read. I worried that maybe I’d burned myself out. I tried Artemis Fowl, I tried a book I was sent by the lovely Penguin Random House, I thought I’d try Red Rising, too, but to no avail. I even tried The Demon’s Lexicon, but in the end I decided to go back to those adorable Demigods.
Pages read: Of the House of Hades book? 66. Of books I tried altogether? Probably 100 or so.
Sigh. It’s such a struggle.
Let’s hope Day 6 is better.

Bout of Books 15 | Day 4

Posted 8 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Adventure, Audiobooks, Mystery, Reading Challenges, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 0 Comments

Bout of Books

Day 4

January 7th

Book I’m reading: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
Pages read: FINISHED! (I continued from page 127 to the end at 370 or something. I took turns between reading and listening via audiobook. Rated it 4 stars.
This book was a whirlwind. Seriously. Just when you thought you knew what was happening, something changed and you were back to square one. I was seriously starting to hate Theo, and then something was revealed and I didn’t hate him so much. And then other stuff happened and man, I can’t wait to read the sequel. I like books that keep me on my toes, although it can get annoying because I don’t like surprises. So there’s that…
Haha.
As for my next read, I’m getting to a point where I might have burned myself out, reading so much in such a short space of time. I had hoped to finish another book by the end of Sunday. Sigh. I’ll let you know tomorrow what happens.

Bout of Books 15 | Day 3

Day 3

January 6th

Book I’m reading: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Pages read: 83 pages, more or less.

I had a slow day, and was out for most of it. I didn’t get much more than a chapter read in the early afternoon, and when I got home from seeing my nieces, I listened to about five more chapters via audiobook. It certainly helps when I’m too tired to concentrate. The terminologies used and the way some of the sentences are put together in this book are way complicated, and in some cases there are words missing (as is evidence when listening to the narrator).

Besides reading, I watched the Shannara Chronicles first (two?) episodes, and also new episode of New Girl. New season, and all. It wasn’t as good as it could be but, eh, oh well.

Hopefully day 4 will be more productive. (so far so good.)

Day Two
January 5th

Books read: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

I finished this with the help of the audiobook as well, because it came down to the last hour and a half and I was too tired to concentrate on words. So I used a spare credit to download the audio and it helped me finish. I loved this book, and I adore the whole demigod stories. The ending was astonishing. I had to cover my mouth in shock, horrified by the events.

I have the next books to read but I’m actually (on day 3) starting a different book, mostly so I don’t rush and finish all the series and then be lost. haha.

Apart from reading, I did a blog post, watched some tv, ate, and also did some colouring in my Harry Potter colouring book. I know. I’m such a child. 😛 But it’s fun. I have all the artistic abilities of a frog, but hey, it doesn’t matter.

January 4th
Wow, did the day go by in a flash!
Book I’m reading: The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus #3) by Rick Riordan
Pages read: 140 pages (give or take a couple. It’s hard to keep up sometime. lol)
Besides reading, I was filming my booktube posts and writing blog posts and eating, watching tv and sleeping. All go for me. 😛
I’m really enjoying this book. I think it’s definitely better than the first two, and that’s saying something given that I loved the others too. I can always tell by how fast I get through it. I’ll admit, I’d already started it before this challenge started, but oh well. Haha.
I hope to get some good reading done  on day 2 (it’s currently the 5th now) and I’ll have todays update posted tomorrow.

It’s Review Time! #YA

Posted 2 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Audiobooks, Contemporary, Funny, Middle Grade, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 1 Comment

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a good Christmas and are ready for another cracking year. I hope 2016 lives up to its expectations.

Okay folks, it has been far too long since I did a review. So instead I’m doing mini reviews to keep it short and sweet. I have 7 books to tell you about, and so I guess I better start!

25877135Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

This book. What can I say that hasn’t already been said in other reviews? I mean, this blew my mind. I went into this completely blind, other than knowing it was a sci-fi ‘space opera’ as many called it. I didn’t know the premise and I was glad. I think if I’d known, I might have been scared off. Illuminae is full of wonder, tragedy, hope, fear, creepy artificial intelligent ready to destroy everyone onboard a spaceship. Yes. That’s basically it. You won’t want to read anything else after because nothing can come close to satisfying your needs like this can. I just…mindblown. I can’t wait for book 2!

11351181The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus #1) by Rick Riordan

I have read all of the Percy Jackson books, and I’d heard this spin off series was actually better…and I couldn’t agree more. I think I prefer this, to be honest. Maybe it was the change in writing style, or the different characters, but I just became more sucked into what was going on and everything stood out clearer. I didn’t get bored and I rooted for each character like they were my own friends. My love for Greek Mythology just got stronger!

12139510Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Well, took my long enough, eh? I never in a month of Sundays thought I’d actually read this. I’ve tried many times but something about the story just put me off. But I was intrigued and determined, so I gave it another shot and absolutely loved it. If I forget that she’s not completely human. There was plenty of mystery and longing romance and just the right amount of sci-fi to keep anyone happy. I can now see what all the fuss is about. I have Scarlet ready and waiting. Yuss!!!

18476697Firecracker by David Iserson

I picked this up one day while in Waterstones, and I’ll admit it was mostly the cover that got me interested. It’s one of those modern day contemporary stories that didn’t get tons of brilliant reviews but surprised me once I’d read it. I thoroughly enjoyed its quirks and how sarcastic and cynical the main lead, Astrid, is. She kind of reminded me of…well, me. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but if you appreciate snarky comebacks and teenage angst and generally spoilt brats being taught a lesson…then you’re ready for this.

4.5 stars

Design K

26224571All Wrapped Up (Geek Girl 1.5) by Holly Smale

A cute Christmassy read that fully exceeded my needs. I love the Geek Girl series and this was just so sweet and (really) short. Don’t let the number of pages fool you. Haha. I was like “wait? that’s it?” but then there’s a Q&A and also a short story that the author wrote for World Book Day. If you’re already a fan of Geek Girl then you’ll love this. If you haven’t read the other books, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy this as a side seasonal treat. 🙂

5 stars

Design K

20910157Yes Please by Amy Poehler

I got the audiobook from audible. I occasionally like listening to memoirs, because I’m not really one to buy them as in the past I just don’t get around to reading them. I went into this not really knowing much about Amy, and I came out a fully fledged fan. She is funny, smart, hard working, and her memoir shows as much. Her story of how she got to where she is today is truly awe-inspiring. She also gives advice and tidbits on what not to do in certain circumstances. The audio includes bits from special guest speakers like Patrick Stewart, Kathleen Turner, Seth Meyers and a bunch of others. Even if you haven’t been a fan of hers to begin with, trust me, this will change your mind.

4 stars

Design K

and finally, my most recent read:

16299169Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan

Just as good, if not better than the first book. I did find, however, there were bits that I found a tad slow, (heavy description, etc) so I had help from the audiobook I bought with my credit, and that pushed me along. I finished this with 3 hours to spare of 2015. Cutting it close, I know. I needed to reach my Goodreads challenge goal. Well, I sort of did. If you count changing the goal at the last minute. 😛

Over all I can’t really find anything specifically wrong. I’m already reading book 3, so that must tell you what I think. I feel like I’m in the Demi-god world and I don’t want to leave.

4 stars.

Thanks for reading. 🙂 Have you read any of these? What did you think?

Audiobook review: 5 stars to You’re Never Weird On The Internet (almost) by Felicia Day #memoir #autobiographical

Posted 17 November, 2015 by katheryn13 in Audiobooks, Reviews, Updates / 3 Comments

From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day, a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.

The Internet isn’t all cat videos. There’s also Felicia Day—violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world…or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet Geeks and Goodreads book clubs.

After growing up in the south where she was “homeschooled for hippie reasons”, Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia’s misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star.

Felicia’s short-ish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now, Felicia’s strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism—just like her memoir.

Hilarious and inspirational, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should embrace what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now—even for a digital misfit.

Review:

I don’t listen to many audiobooks, usually because my brain has trouble imagining properly. I can’t keep going back and listening to the same thing over and over and over… Yeah you get the picture? hahaha punny.

So when I do listen, it’s usually memoirs/autobiographies because let’s face it, that doesn’t involve the imagination. And more often than not, it’s really fun learning more about someone. I particularly found Felicia Day’s life fascinating. I mean, I’d known the basics about her, and that was really the basics. Her story was emotional, heartwarming, inspiring, upsetting, and shocking. Some things horrified me, to be perfectly honest.

The things that she’s been through, had to put up with, etc, just awful. Then again, she’s made so many people happy, and inspired people to do things they probably wouldn’t even dream of. In particular she’s definitely inspired me to stick with my writing and persevere. I mean, I’m not the most…disciplined, and I often feel like giving up, but she showed me that you can succeed at anything if you put your mind to it.

I don’t often get emotional – and I don’t mean all teary eyed, but just…thoughtful – over stuff like this, but it made me think and you know that when I start thinking, shit is about to go DOWN. Haha.

I kind of wish there was a sequel to this. I know, silly, because it’s a MEMOIR not a novel. But that’s how compelling it was, and I would gladly listen again someday.

#TheShelfieHop

Posted 16 November, 2015 by katheryn13 in Updates / 9 Comments

ShelfieHop

Hey guys! So this is exciting, huh? We all get to see each others shelves and stuff. *nods enthusiastically* Great!

I had planned (back when I thought the Shelfie Hop was on the 19th…not the 16th!) to reorganise a bit and generally make it look a bit better, BUT since I forgot the date, I’ve had to…uh..rush. Here goes the lovely tour of my bedroom book cases and such. (It’s not everything, because I have books in places I can’t physically get to…yeah the house is a mess. lol) I hope you like my bookshelf guardians, too. I love my funko pops! 😀

DSC_0032

Now a more up close and personal with my selections from the case above. Every section (except the top and the bottom which have random hardbacks) are in alphabetical order (or as best as I could get), and they go as follows:

DSC_0039

Also, stuck above this lot are two colouring books: Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. 🙂
DSC_0040

Behind the VA books are the Mara Dyer trilogy and…more VA books. haha.
1447675921137_camera

DSC_0041

right at the bottom are hardbacks of Twilight saga, Ember in the Ashes and the whole series of the Morganville Vampires. (excuse the mess around this part. lol) You might also be able to tell I have more than one copy of Illuminae. That’s a whole ‘nuther story. Sigh.
DSC_0034

This is my TBR book case, though admittedly now it’s more a place to put the books I haven’t read but might not actually get around to…lol
DSC_0035

You can see I originally had the letters forming TBR SHELF on this, but they keep falling off.
DSC_0036

This is the back book case which originally had the books that are in the organised one, but because most of my favourite series were in there, I had to move them. So now this contains the books that I’m not so bothered about and are least likely to reread any time soon. The bottom shelf isn’t accessible unless I move my tv and everything. But basically it’s more of the same.
1447676741865_camera

DSC_0038

So that’s my book shelf tour, or shelves…haha. I hope you enjoyed or were somewhat enlightened with my vast array of books. Like I said earlier, these are just what I have on display. There are far more in other rooms but they’re either in boxes or I’m not able to get at to take a picture.

This was a fun post to make, and I love seeing other people’s displays, so for more bloggers taking part, see below:
