Summary from Goodreads:
A thrilling, futuristic sci-fi novel set in a unique and thought-provoking world, from author Shannon Duffy.

Desiree Six (because she was born on a Friday) believes in everything the Protectorate stands for. She likes the safety and security of having her entire life planned out—her career, her mate, even the date of her death. She doesn’t even think to question when Darien, her childhood friend and neighbor, is convicted of murdering his parents. They had seemed like such a loving family. But if he was convicted, then he must have done it.

Then Darien shows up in her room late one night. He has escaped from the Terrorscape—a nightmare machine used to punish all Noncompliants—and needs Desiree’s help. What he tells her rocks her world to its core and makes her doubt everything she’s ever been told. With this new information, will Desiree and Darien be able to escape the Protectorate before it’s too late?

#BOOKHAUL #1 – March 2015 edition #YA #Fantasy #Contemporary #Dystopian

BOOK HAUL #1

March 2015

I’ve not done a book haul in….oh god, years? I’m pretty sure this is either the second or third post I’ve ever done on it. I keep meaning to, but you know how it goes…

Now, I know the end of the month is a weird time to put one up, but granted, I don’t get books all the time, so it might not be every month, and when in the month I don’t know. I’m confusing myself. Right…On with it.

This month I seem to have accumulated quite a few books, from either the library or buying, or even as freebies ( Who doesn’t like a freebie, huh?)

Bought books:

Legend/Prodigy/Champion by Marie Lu – Last year sometime, I got Legend from the library. It took me ages to track it down, but once I did, I read it and loved it and I guess I got a bit sidetracked because I kept meaning to get the next two but didn’t. And the book shop would always have one without the others, so I couldn’t buy them in order. Until now, that is. FINALLY. I saw the Legend series in Waterstones and I was like “Those are MINE!” kinda like Gollum except not quite as creepy. I can’t wait to continue reading the series, but as you’ll find out, I have many more to get one with.

Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton – What feels like a long time ago now (but was only actually a few months) I requested and was accepted a copy of Seeker from Netgalley. Now, for those of you new to reading my blog, I’m TERRIBLE at reading ebooks.  I don’t have a kindle so I read off my laptop. I prefer print copies, therefore when I saw this in shop, I had to get it. Now I can flit through it like a…very fast reader? I dunno, I’m not fast at anything. But I’m excited to try this. It’s got a fantasy element with lots of action and adventure. 🙂

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – I’ve had this book a good month or more, which I guess doesn’t count as a march haul, but it will do for now. I had heard such big things about it, and also…some not. So I’m a bit unsure about how I’m going to get on with it. Still, it will be interesting. Sometimes I’ll hear bad things and then read it, only to find I love it. Everyone’s different.

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch – I had pre ordered this way back in November, and finally managed to pick it up in February (the warehouse had issues, and apparently didn’t want to email me to tell me that Waterstones had the book delivered already -.-) so again, not technically a March book, but you get the picture. I’m catching up. I am currently half way through this beast of a book, and let me tell you…it’s a good one. However, I’ve hit a bit of a…rut, as it were, with reading and so have come to a halt. I want to finish it, but it might be a while. I blame Netflix. Then again, I was the one that signed up for a month…*sigh*

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins – I’ve waited for EVER to get this. I’ve seen reviews and also, I loved Hex Hall (though the sequel…not as much…) so I was looking forward to this. When the paperback was finally up on Amazon, I grabbed it. Unfortunately, I have tried to read a bit of it, and I just can’t seem to get into it. Maybe once I’m fully out of my rut, I’ll have a fresher head to deal with complex descriptions, but for now it’s going on the back burner.

The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury – Another one I’ve heard endless praise for and when I saw it, I thought oh what the hell? I haven’t started it yet, but I’ll let you all know when I do.

Library Books:

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige – Not necessarily a book I’ll read twice, but people have talked about it and it’s got me intrigued. I think it’s a horror kind of story so I’m unsure. But hey…the name caught my interest.

Tape by Steven Camden – The name, the cover, the blurb on the back…It’s not my usual kind of book, but it sounds good.

Riot by Sarah Mussi – Again, the cover caught my attention. I think I’ve seen this advertised before, but wasn’t sure about it. So that’s why I get from the library the ones I’m on the edge about.

Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaira – I’ve seen this around for ages, but now I finally bit the bullet and got it. 🙂

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson – I was meant to get this last summer. I’d entered a contemporary kick and was all over them like a crazy person. But what bit I had read of this, I wasn’t sure I wanted to buy it. So now I can read it without the added commitment…squeee!

Freebies!!!

As I said before, who doesn’t like free books?! I recently got invited to a book blogger event for Maria V Snyder, promoting her new book Shadow Seeker. Though I’m shy and awkward and socially inept, I did have a good time. It was lovely to meet Maria and the many other book bloggers. I don’t usually get involved in the community like others do, so it was a bit daunting. I hadn’t known what to expect as it was my first ever blogger event, so I was surprised when they gave out goody bags at the end.

Inside these were:

Breaking The Rules by Katie McGarry – I loved Pushing The Limits, but didn’t necessarily like the others in that series, so I’m so happy to finally have more of Echo and Noah.

Monster by C. J. Skuse – I’ve not heard of this before, but I guess that makes sense as it’s an advanced copy. Anyway, it looks great and I can’t wait to dig in.

I also got given a copy of Shadow Seeker by Maria V Snyder. It was funny because I’d only rushed out that day to get it to get signed…only to be handed one at the event. Sods law, really. I’m a few chapters in to it now and loving it! FYI the UK cover is so much better. 😛

I would mention what I got from Netgalley as well but I’m afraid that might make me sound worse than I feel. HaHa.

What are you reading? Any books you’re looking forward to that are out in April? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Excerpt

My heart pounded on the walls of my chest, reverberating through my ears as I neared the door. I began to feel faint. I grabbed the handle with my damp palms and twisted slowly, and then in one quick motion, I whipped the door open.

My heart beat slowed when I found nothing in the storage room but a bunch of boxes. I switched off the light and let the door fall shut with a click.

Once I was back in the dark hallway by myself and ready to leave, the humming noise caught my attention once again. What was that? I followed the sound and pressed my ear against the door that led to the break room.

I could hear muffled voices, but I didn’t see a light under the door. Who was in there? The sound, I realized, was a woman humming a stagnant note.

We’re here to help you,” Sophie’s voice rang over the humming.

I didn’t take a moment to consider what they were doing behind the door. Once I was sure it was my mother and her friends, I wasn’t scared anymore.

I had only a split second to take in the scene. The three girls sat in a circle around the break table, their hands connected as if in prayer. Candles lit up their faces. Just beyond the table stood another girl with blonde hair and brown eyes. Olivia Owen’s ghost stared back at me with that same look of urgency.

EXCERPT!!!!

I walk down the dirt road and stare off into the distance, my mind on the impending war, when my eye catches on something beside the road. A half mile away, but absolutely there. I edge closer, another step, then another, my heartbeat picking up. The wind slowly slips around me, throwing my hair in my face as I strain to see.

The figure moves toward me, and I toward it, then I see long white hair whip in the wind and suddenly my blood stops pumping, my legs stop moving, my lungs stop drawing breath. But still, he continues to move. I scramble back, falling, digging into the dirt, desperate to get away. I have no weapon, nothing. I’m not prepared. I can’t fight him. Not here. Not now. And then in a blink of the eye, he’s in front of me and every muscle in my body quakes with fear. A slow smile creeps across Zeus’s face, and then one word is placed in my mind as though it were my thought instead of his.

Soon.

Ah!” I gasp for a breath that won’t come and scramble up, only to find myself tangled in blankets. I fight against them, just as Jackson pulls me against him. “Jackson?” I blink hard, momentarily disoriented. “How did I get back here? Where is he? Did you see him?”

I try to stand, but Jackson forces me to sit still. “Ari, it was just a dream. You had a dream.”

No. You weren’t in here. I was alone and then I went outside and—”

You didn’t. I came in shortly after we all went to bed. I couldn’t sleep without you. And I’m sorry about earlier.”

My mind reels, unable to stop. “Wait, no, you weren’t here, and I left. I went outside. I—”

Why don’t I get you some water? Stay here, okay? I’ll be right back.”

He steps outside the makeshift curtain, and I sit back in my bed, my hands shaking. I clench them together in hopes of steadying them, and that’s when my gaze lands on my fingers, on the thick red mud caked underneath each nail. I hold them out in front of me, fighting to keep a sob from escaping my lips.

It wasn’t a dream. Zeus is here.

#ARC #Review: 3.5 stars to Mind Games by Teri Terry #SCIFI #UKYA

Posted 10 February, 2015 by katheryn13 in Dystopian, Reviews, Sci-Fi, YA / 1 Comment

Luna is a no-hoper with a secret: in a world of illusion, she can see what is real. But can she see the truth before it is too late?

Luna has always been able to exist in virtual and real worlds at the same time, a secret she is warned to keep. She hides her ability by being a Refuser: excluded by choice from the virtual spheres others inhabit. But when she is singled out for testing, she can’t hide any longer.

The safest thing to do would be to fail, to go back to a dead-end life, no future. But Luna is starting to hope for something better, and hope is a dangerous thing…

Released March 5th 2015

Disclaimer: I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

So, well, okay where to start? First off, I just want to say how pleased I was to be accepted when I requested this. I loved the Slated series and so was really anticipating new stuff from Teri Terry!

I’ve been torn, severely, about what to rate this, however, so excuse me while I get my thoughts in order.

The premise sounded great, and I can really see that technology may well get to the point where we’re given implants and live mostly in a virtual world. It’s scary. I found myself so captivated by the prospect, and the world, and how it all escalated so quickly.

I’m still not sure if I liked Luna. I guess I did, but then certain things she did, or that happened to her, made me want to throw the book across the room in frustration.  She never stayed consistent with her moods.

I didn’t like Gecko at first. I expected he would be some kind of love interest to Luna and it instantly put me off. I thought Luna was strong enough to deal on her own, and she was. But actually, Gecko turned out to be a decent guy. I ended up feeling sorry for him in the end. He definitely came off worse, in my opinion.

Hex. I liked him at first. He was fairly minor, not really in nor out of the story. After a while, though, I just didn’t trust him.

Luna’s family I felt were a bit of a nonevent. I found I didn’t care about them. Some parents in books I instantly GET, and like, but these people were just…there. The same with Luna’s grandmother who, I thought, was going to be some kind of major part of the book.

Tempo was a tricky character. I thought she was a bit too…evil-doer, and not a lot else to her. Not much back story there. There were many other minor characters who were good, who I would have loved to hear more of, but they just…disappeared. The sad part is, I can’t even remember their names now, but I know at the time I liked them.

The whole book was like a roller-coaster that never seemed to stop. It was up one minute, down the next, and I’d go from hooked, to really annoyed to really hooked again. A lot of people have said the ending was bad, and though I agree it was wrapped up quick, I thought it was decent enough. At first, I forgot this was a standalone. In which case, yeah maybe it could have used more…detail.  In some ways, the ending seemed more like a lead up to a sequel, but that’s okay if it’s not. I don’t like harsh ending’s anyway. And funny, because I’ve never been a fan of epilogues, and this time we get one with limited detail and here I am like “GIMME MORE!”

I wish I could have rated this higher, but there were just too many “Argh!” moments for that to happen. It’s okay, though, because I stuck with it. I wouldn’t have given up. I think Teri has such a refreshing way of telling stories, that I knew it would get better. And it did. Just not consistently enough for me. :/

The ‘Avril (freaking!) Lavigne’ #BOOKTAG! #YA

Posted 1 February, 2015 by katheryn13 in Contemporary, Dystopian, Fun, Paranormal, Romance, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, YA / 0 Comments

Everybody in the blogosphere seems to be doing the Taylor Swift book tag. Now, I LOVE TayTay. But I think if I were to do that, I’d be jumping on THAT particular band wagon. Time for a mix up, eh? So this time, I’m going to bring out the old school music and go for…

Avril (FREAKING!!!) Lavigne!

Granted, her older stuff is way better than the new, but who cares? Here goes my list!

(P.S. Sorry about the set up. I’ve tried it fix it like…10 times, but the alignments just won’t do what I want.)

Anything But Ordinary

This book. Oh this book. I got it a few months after it came out. I heard all the hype. I tried it, didn’t like it, couldn’t get into it, dropped it. Months later, tried again. Same result. A year later…I read it, and BOOM. Something in my brain clicked, and then I couldn’t get enough! This is definitely anything but ordinary!

My Happy Ending

Allegiant by Veronica Roth. I’d LOVED the first two, Divergent and Insurgent. I’d had hopes for Allegiant, but since so many complained about it before I’d managed to get a copy, I found myself losing faith…Why couldn’t we have worked it out?!

What The Hell?!

So this could be both ‘what hell were you thinking?” or ‘what the hell, I’m gonna like this even if you don’t!” And with that, I declare:

The Fallen series is my biggest ‘WHAT THE HELL?!” series ever. I loved it (granted, the last book was let down a bit, but the rest…great.) Now. I’m sure you’re wondering why I haven’t put Twilight under this tag. I would. But so many others have also done this, it now seems redundant.

Push

“Maybe you should just shut up
Even when it gets tough
Baby ‘cause this is love.
And you know when push comes to shove
It’s gonna take the both of us
Baby, this is love
Baby, this is love”

NEED I (or Avril?) SAY MORE? All the hearts.

Goodbye

“Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye my love
I can’t hide, can’t hide, can’t hide what has come

I have to go
I have to go
I have to go
And leave you alone
But always know
Always know
Always know that I love you so
I love you so
I love you so, oh”

Here’s To Never Growing Up

Pretty sure this title has to go to Harry Potter. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for the books and though I know it’s read by many adults, it’s still the first fantasy book I ever picked up (at 14? I think.). I’ll never forget it. ♥

I’d put in pictures, but there are too many. haha.

Not Enough

The House Of Night series by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast.

Sorry, but I’d loved these books…and then by book 9 they just started to get ridiculous. I can’t believe they’re still going, or have just finished –  I lost track. It saddens me when this happens.

“I’m sorry if this hurts you
But I tried to keep what we had once I was wrong
It wasn’t keeping me awake

You didn’t listen, you didn’t hear me
When I said I want more, I got no more
You weren’t stealing me away

It’s not enough, it’s not enough
To give me what it is I want
It’s not enough, it’s not enough
To get me everything I need
And I, I wish it was
I think it’s time to give this up”

4 Real

“‘Cause I’m 4 real, are you 4 real?
I can’t help myself, it’s the way I feel
When you look me in the eyes, like you did last night
I can’t stand to hear you say goodbye

Well, it feels so right ’cause it feels so right
Just to have you standing by my side
So don’t let me go ’cause you have my soul
And I just wanted you to know

I don’t wanna look back ’cause I know that we have
Something the past could never change
And now I’m stuck in the moment and my heart is open
Tell me that you feel the same.”

The award goes to:

Silver Shadows Collage

I can’t believe this series is coming to an end, with Ruby Circle being the last book. *hear my cries!* I’m going to miss Adrian. SYDRIAN FEELS EVERYWHERE! And just…the whole world that Richelle Mead has created. I look forward to what she does next, but I don’t know…will it…CAN it…top this?

The Best Damn Thing

It’s a toss up between:

       AND

I recently discovered the Geek Girl series and I am in love, but then Silver Shadows was the best thing ever and….*sigh*

When You’re Gone

“When you’re gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you’re gone
The face I came to know is missing too

When you’re gone
The words I need to hear to always get me through
The day and make it ok
I miss you”

Yeah, I really miss this. I reread all the time, but it’s not really the same, is it?

Innocence

“It’s the state of bliss you think you’re dreaming
It’s the happiness inside that you’re feeling
It’s so beautiful, it makes you wanna cry.”

This book was one raved about book and I am so glad it came into my world. I loved it. The world, the people, the story itself…

All the hearts!

 Wish You Were Here

This goes for several series that have ended, but the biggest one (and yes, I know she hasn’t ended the world of Shadowhunters, she has finished this series!) has to be:

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

I actually wanted to put Twilight, lol. I really want to. Can I have two? I think…okay. So this song goes to both Twilight and TMI AND TID and well okay SO many. But yeah…you get the picture. *sniffles*

Last but not least!

Smile

“Yo-u said “Hey,
What’s your name?”
It took one look
And now we’re not the same
Yeah you said “Hey.”
And since that day
You stole my heart
And you’re the one to blame”

‘Nuff said. 😀

Lyrics from MetroLyrics and pictures from goodreads and google.

I hope you enjoyed this post. 🙂

#YA releases in #2015 – TOP 20

Posted 2 January, 2015 by katheryn13 in Contemporary, Dystopian, Fantasy, Fun, Funny, Mature, Middle Grade, Paranormal, Paranormal Romance, Romance, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, YA / 0 Comments

http://picasion.com/gl/45O5/

So for the past few years I’ve assembled a list of books released in the year, month by month. But because of time and effort, I’ve decided to compile my top 20 most anticipated books in Young Adult!

In no particular order:

1: The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines, #6) by Richelle Mead

It’ll be such a shame to see this amazing series end. I have loved every book of Bloodlines, just as I had with Vampire Academy. I’m really excited to see how it ends. Sad, too.

2) The Shadow Cabinet (Shades of London, #3) by Maureen Johnson

It seems like decades ago since book 2 was released. After that cliff hanger, I thought I wouldn’t survive the wait, but here I am. Alive and kicking and screaming, wanting book 3!

3) The Heir (The Selection, #4) by Kiera Cass

When The One was released, I read it as fast as I could and then suffered from the biggest book-hangover. The prospect of having MORE of these adorable characters….words fail me.

4) End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3) by Susan Ee

I was a late comer to this partaaay! But I fell in love with Penryn and Raffe, and can’t wait for more.

5) All Fall Down (Embassy Row #1) by Ally Carter

Yikes! It feels like forever since the Gallagher Girls series ended, and then you had Heist Society which seems to have gone on a break – and I’m very excited for All Fall Down. The wait is nearly over!

6) Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

What can I say? It’s Rainbow!

7) Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard

I’ve heard a lot about this book and I look forward to putting the rumours to rest. I’m sure I’ll love it!

8) Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices, #1) by Cassandra Clare

More Shadowhunters kicking butt…just the way I like it. 🙂

9) P.S. I Still Love You (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, #2) by Jenny Han

I wasn’t sure if there was ever going to be a sequel, but here we are. And I am bouncing.

10) All That Glitters (Geek Girl, Book 4) by Holly Smale

I’ve yet to finish Geek Girl 3 (I’d been reading it in the book shop because I’m waiting for it come out in paperback) but am hopping with excitement over book 4!

11) The Selection Stories: The Queen & The Favorite (The Selection, #0.4, #2.6) by Keira Cass

It’s Kiera. End of discussion.

12) Shadow Study (Soulfinders, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

I’ve enjoyed Maria’s other word (Poison Study series, and I’ve got the others somewhere…) so I’m looking forward to this.

13) The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent

I missed Rachel’s work. I loved the Soul Screamer series, and this sounds just as good!

14) Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy (Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, #1) by Cassandra Clare

More Shadowhunters. LOVE IT!

15) The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

Interested.

16) Menagerie (Menagerie, #1) by Rachel Vincent

Another new gem from Rachel and I can’t freaking WAIT!

17) Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi

I heard this is a Middle Grade story, but I don’t care. I heart Tahereh’s writing so much. She’s just…perfection.

18) Burn (The Rephaim, #4) by Paula Weston

Ahhhhhh! This has to be one of the most underrated series ever. I love these.

19) Burning Kingdoms (Internment Chronicles, #2) by Lauren DeStefano

SQUEEE!

20) Please Remain Calm (This Is Not a Test, #2) by Courtney Summers

Book 1 was wild. Book 2 must be CRAZY.

As you can see most of these are continuations of a series, but there are a few that are new. Let me know what you’re excited for in the comments below. 😀

Season Three, Episode One Blurb:

Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

It’s been six months since Reagan Willow fled the Colony and Matthias Allen’s tyrannical clutches. Six months since she broke Hendrix Parker’s heart. Six months since she watched Kane Allen sacrifice his life to save hers.
Whatever was left of her already-tattered life during the Zombie Apocalypse fell apart six months ago. Now, on the cusp of crossing the Mexican border, there is hope that she might lead her friends to a better existence.

Except Zombies are only the beginning of their problems. Reagan and her friends must battle the elements, armies of Feeders and bounty hunters desperate to drag them back to the Colony to face their greatest threat.

The Colony’s power stretches wide and far. Their only hope is to outrun Matthias and get to Mexico.

Love and Decay, Episode One is the first episode in Season Three of a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.

Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

A vaccination gone oh so wrong and a huge portion of the world’s population was turned into Zombies. Reagan Willow is forced out of her home when her parents become casualties of the horrid Zombie Apocalypse. With the help of her best friend Haley, they’ve become somewhat of experts on surviving the dangers of a world thrust into chaos and decay.

Reagan and Haley are on a vague mission to find somewhere safe to live out the remainders of their terrifying life when they stumble upon the Parkers, a pack of brothers that seem to have the survival thing down in a much more efficient and successful way than Reagan could ever have imagined. They are also protecting their eight year old sister, Page, and will do anything to keep her safe.

The brothers decide that Reagan and Haley need help with being kept safe as well, and as a group they set off to find the Zombie-free utopia Reagan is dreaming of.

Zombies are a daily problem, constantly threatening the lives of their group, but they’re not the only peril on the journey ahead. Militia groups of power hungry men are also a constant concern. And settlements of paranoid, suspicious people turn out to be just as hazardous.

Danger looms over every inch of the way, but Reagan, Haley and the Parkers are determined to get to their goal and remain together. Soon the Parkers become more to Reagan than just traveling companions and more than friendship starts to develop between her and Hendrix, the second oldest brother.

But at the end of the world, nothing can be as simple as life and death. Now, Reagan is going to have to schedule falling in love between hunting and surviving. Hopefully she can last long enough to find out if true love can still exist when everything else has started to fall apart.

Love and Decay, Volume One, is a compilation of the first six episodes in a twelve episode season. It is a Dystopian Romance Novella Series about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.

This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks. Each episode is approximately 20,000 words.

For fans of HEROES and
X-MEN…

Young love can be deadly.
At seventeen, Hadley Grace knows it all too well.
When her boyfriend mysteriously dies in her arms, Hadley’s parents are terrified.

MONSTER, they call her.
CRIMINAL, they whisper behind her back.

Hadley is forced from her home, and her once comfortable life, into the unknown with only one rule from the loving parents who raised her: Never come back.

Heartbroken and alone, Hadley arrives at Little Hearts Orphanage, a place filled with others like her. Through training Hadley learns more about her skills and her protective nature. She is a Mosaic. A scientific anomaly of the human race capable of things most other teenagers only dream of.

Hadley soon discovers this world is much different than the one she left behind. Mosaics are a hot commodity. Someone’s always chasing you, wanting to use what you have. Hadley is never going to let that happen.

But how can she keep herself and her new friends safe, when with one touch, they’re gone?
