(Video) My January Wrap Up | 2016

Posted 2 February, 2016 by katheryn13 in Contemporary, Espionage, Middle Grade, Reviews, Sci-Fi, Updates, Video, YA / 0 Comments

I thought I’d try to share what I put on youtube these days on my blog and so here we are. I made a mild mistake on my video, where I didn’t explain what any of the books are about. (FAIL!) So at least now I know for next time. I’m still learning. I hate it. I also need to learn to do cover photos.
It’s funny, I filmed a whole load, but then realised I couldn’t really spoil on a video compiled of a few books, as that would be awkward, so I had to cut. And it’s sad because any other time I wouldn’t know what to say. Anyway.
Here you go.

#GIVEAWAY: Illuminae by Jay Kristoff & Amy Kaufman (UK only)

Posted 30 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Giveaways, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 3 Comments

HELLO THERE!

So today on my blog I’m going to do something a little different and for no reason at all other than to make space for other lovely books, I’m giving away a copy of Illuminae that I got but haven’t read (loooong story but basically Book Depository messed up) and now I’m thinking maybe there’ll be someone else out there who’d love a copy (and who isn’t fussed that there’s no jacket to it). If that person is YOU, then all you gotta do is enter the raffle down below! 😀

 Goodreads Synopsis:

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Here’s my official review I posted a while back:

This book. What can I say that hasn’t already been said in other reviews? I mean, this blew my mind. I went into this completely blind, other than knowing it was a sci-fi ‘space opera’ as many called it. I didn’t know the premise and I was glad. I think if I’d known, I might have been scared off. Illuminae is full of wonder, tragedy, hope, fear, creepy artificial intelligent ready to destroy everyone onboard a spaceship. Yes. That’s basically it. You won’t want to read anything else after because nothing can come close to satisfying your needs like this can. I just…mindblown. I can’t wait for book 2!

5 stars

Good luck and may good books be ever in your favour. 😛

#RYBSAT and A Winter’s Respite | Update

Posted 24 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Fantasy, Reading Challenges, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Updates, YA / 0 Comments

Hello,

It’s me.

Did you miss me?

I’ve missed a few days, I know. That wasn’t planned, I promise. But honestly? I’ve been really stuck on my reading. It’s been scattered and full of uncertainties. I started a couple but couldn’t get into them. I read a hundred pages of Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson but I just…couldn’t continue.

Not that it’s bad, but it was feeling a bit…tedious. I wasn’t into it. And then I worried what else to read because I know part of the challenge of RYBSAT is you have to read along you TBR shelf and you’re not supposed to change around but then I saw the others in the row weren’t calling to me and I became…concerned.

In the end I thought screw it. There’s no point worrying over what to read. I’ll pick something else somewhere else on the shelves and now I’m reading:

The Young Elites by Marie Lu.

I’m 70 pages in and loving it.

So there you have it. It’s the last day for both of these challenges, so I can’t say I’ve succeeded hugely, but at least I’ve been reading.

That’s the whole point, right?

Well, until next time I guess.

Bye,

-Kat

Bout of Books 15 | Day 4

Posted 8 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Adventure, Audiobooks, Mystery, Reading Challenges, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 0 Comments

Bout of Books

Day 4

January 7th

Book I’m reading: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
Pages read: FINISHED! (I continued from page 127 to the end at 370 or something. I took turns between reading and listening via audiobook. Rated it 4 stars.
This book was a whirlwind. Seriously. Just when you thought you knew what was happening, something changed and you were back to square one. I was seriously starting to hate Theo, and then something was revealed and I didn’t hate him so much. And then other stuff happened and man, I can’t wait to read the sequel. I like books that keep me on my toes, although it can get annoying because I don’t like surprises. So there’s that…
Haha.
As for my next read, I’m getting to a point where I might have burned myself out, reading so much in such a short space of time. I had hoped to finish another book by the end of Sunday. Sigh. I’ll let you know tomorrow what happens.

It’s Review Time! #YA

Posted 2 January, 2016 by katheryn13 in Audiobooks, Contemporary, Funny, Middle Grade, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 1 Comment

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a good Christmas and are ready for another cracking year. I hope 2016 lives up to its expectations.

Okay folks, it has been far too long since I did a review. So instead I’m doing mini reviews to keep it short and sweet. I have 7 books to tell you about, and so I guess I better start!

25877135Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

11351181The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus #1) by Rick Riordan

I have read all of the Percy Jackson books, and I’d heard this spin off series was actually better…and I couldn’t agree more. I think I prefer this, to be honest. Maybe it was the change in writing style, or the different characters, but I just became more sucked into what was going on and everything stood out clearer. I didn’t get bored and I rooted for each character like they were my own friends. My love for Greek Mythology just got stronger!

12139510Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Well, took my long enough, eh? I never in a month of Sundays thought I’d actually read this. I’ve tried many times but something about the story just put me off. But I was intrigued and determined, so I gave it another shot and absolutely loved it. If I forget that she’s not completely human. There was plenty of mystery and longing romance and just the right amount of sci-fi to keep anyone happy. I can now see what all the fuss is about. I have Scarlet ready and waiting. Yuss!!!

18476697Firecracker by David Iserson

I picked this up one day while in Waterstones, and I’ll admit it was mostly the cover that got me interested. It’s one of those modern day contemporary stories that didn’t get tons of brilliant reviews but surprised me once I’d read it. I thoroughly enjoyed its quirks and how sarcastic and cynical the main lead, Astrid, is. She kind of reminded me of…well, me. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but if you appreciate snarky comebacks and teenage angst and generally spoilt brats being taught a lesson…then you’re ready for this.

4.5 stars

26224571All Wrapped Up (Geek Girl 1.5) by Holly Smale

A cute Christmassy read that fully exceeded my needs. I love the Geek Girl series and this was just so sweet and (really) short. Don’t let the number of pages fool you. Haha. I was like “wait? that’s it?” but then there’s a Q&A and also a short story that the author wrote for World Book Day. If you’re already a fan of Geek Girl then you’ll love this. If you haven’t read the other books, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy this as a side seasonal treat. 🙂

20910157Yes Please by Amy Poehler

I got the audiobook from audible. I occasionally like listening to memoirs, because I’m not really one to buy them as in the past I just don’t get around to reading them. I went into this not really knowing much about Amy, and I came out a fully fledged fan. She is funny, smart, hard working, and her memoir shows as much. Her story of how she got to where she is today is truly awe-inspiring. She also gives advice and tidbits on what not to do in certain circumstances. The audio includes bits from special guest speakers like Patrick Stewart, Kathleen Turner, Seth Meyers and a bunch of others. Even if you haven’t been a fan of hers to begin with, trust me, this will change your mind.

4 stars

Design K

and finally, my most recent read:

16299169Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan

Just as good, if not better than the first book. I did find, however, there were bits that I found a tad slow, (heavy description, etc) so I had help from the audiobook I bought with my credit, and that pushed me along. I finished this with 3 hours to spare of 2015. Cutting it close, I know. I needed to reach my Goodreads challenge goal. Well, I sort of did. If you count changing the goal at the last minute. 😛

Over all I can’t really find anything specifically wrong. I’m already reading book 3, so that must tell you what I think. I feel like I’m in the Demi-god world and I don’t want to leave.

4 stars.

Thanks for reading. 🙂 Have you read any of these? What did you think?

#NewPost: Booktube #videos #bookbloggers #BookTube

Posted 23 September, 2015 by katheryn13 in Booktube, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, YA / 0 Comments

I don’t know if you know, but a few months ago I started a BookTube account (properly). I’ve got a few videos up now, mostly tags, and I thought that I’d embed them in a post so you can see, and also, so I can have something to post. Haha. The point of my booktube was so I could integrate it with this site, so why not. Okay, in no particular order:

BookTube Newbie Tag

Rip it or Ship it Tag

Book Courtship Tag

Nintendo Book Tag

I decided not to embed a couple of other videos because…well….they’re silly. 🙂 Hope you enjoyed.

Peace!!

Here I am again, bringing you a new video. I won’t be doing these all the time, thank god. I can’t bear to keep editing myself ALL THE TIME. Yikes! Anyway, sorry it’s not the greatest quality. It seemed better when I was editing. Sigh. 🙂

My USA trip + San Diego Comic Con #BookHaul

Posted 21 July, 2015 by katheryn13 in Contemporary, Fantasy, Fun, Middle Grade, Mystery, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Updates, YA / 1 Comment

Welcome, welcome. So it’s been a few weeks. Can’t believe it’s gone so quickly. Bah! Feels like just last week I was posting about going away. Anyway, here I am. I have LOTS of new books I can’t wait to show you. For this, I decided to do a video as writing it all would kill my hands.

Enjoy 😀

p.s. Still getting the hang of editing so please excuse any hiccups along the way.

Funnily enough, as soon as I’d finished all the recording, my mum came home with more packages and two books I’d forgotten I’d ordered. Those were:

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by  Laini Taylor.

So there you have it, I am officially bogged down with books. HA. As if that’s even a bad thing. As I said in the video, I’d love to know what books you’re looking forward to reading or have read, whether I mentioned it or not.

The giveaway will be announced officially on Thursday so keep an eye out because there are more than just 2 books going.  Why yes, I am feeling generous.

And have a good Tuesday, wherever you are. 🙂

#Video: Ruby Red/These Broken Stars review + update

Posted 1 June, 2015 by katheryn13 in Espionage, Reviews, Romance, Sci-Fi, Updates, YA / 1 Comment

So I’m testing out a little thing. I sometimes can’t always be bothered to write a review (yes yes we all know I’m lazy!) and depending on my mood, and depending on how well the videos are received, I’ll do video reviews.
So…it’s all up to you. If no one wants to see my mug on screen (which I can’t blame you for, really) then I’ll not do anymore.

😀

Also, I’m REALLY new at this, so I’m still learning what to say and stuff. As you’ll be able to tell, I’m not anywhere near as articulate on video as I am in writing. LOL.
